PERSONAL COUNSELLING
Personal counselling is available under a mental health care plan from your GP or through self-referral. You are able to have 10 sessions a year through Medicare on the GP plan with your psychologist providing reviews to your GP after 6 sessions and 10 sessions to ensure holistic care.
Personal counselling sessions are 50 minutes in duration and within a person-centred approach, the psychologist is very attuned to the needs and concerns of the client. We use a range of therapeutic styles, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, ACT (Acceptance Commitment Therapy) and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT). These are all approaches supported by Medicare as good practice, and have been shown to be effective in supporting clients with a variety of mental health concerns.
Gayle focuses on helping you to understand why your mind is reacting to current and past events with the thoughts, emotions and behaviours that you are experiencing. She has a compassion-focused orientation to therapy, which aims to reduce the feelings of shame and distress associated with experiences and beliefs about the self. Within this framework, we explore together what your goals for therapy are, and learn ways of challenging unhelpful thoughts whilst honouring the emotions beneath them. We are focused on what is happening for you in the present, whilst also helping you identify patterns from your past to enable new ways of coping and thriving.
